When the .NET generic top-level domain name extension was initially introduced in 1985, together with the first domain extensions on the World Wide Web, it was meant to be used by Internet Service Providers or infrastructure firms. Taking into account that there were no special regulations about the usage of the top-level domain extension, though, .NET domains were bought and used for diverse purposes and by lots of people. This extension is an ideal alternative to dot COM, particularly if the desired domain with the latter TLD is not available for registration.
